"Each year Home Instead Senior Care offices throughout North America spread holiday cheer to lonely or financially-challenged seniors through the Be a Santa to a Senior program. The program has attracted upwards of 60,000 volunteers over the past six years distributing gifts to deserving seniors. Since introducing the Be a Santa to a Senior program, Home Instead Senior Care has helped provide 1.2 million gifts to more than 700,000 seniors."

The Home Instead Be a Santa to a Senior Program identifies seniors who may not otherwise receive gifts during the holiday season and finds out what items they need. Home Instead does this by partnering with individual volunteers and non-profits and community organizations who work with seniors.
- Find a participating Be a Santa to a Senior location.
- Remove bulb with senior’s gift request from a tree.
- Purchase the requested gift listed on the bulb.
- Place bulb and unwrapped gift in the designated box.
Participating local businesses and retail stores then place christmas trees and ornaments within their stores.
Each senior's gift request is written on a Be a Santa to a Senior tree ornament such as, 'A size 9 pair of slippers for Mary.'
Volunteers wishing to purchase gifts for seniors during the holidays remove an ornament from a tree, purchase the requested gift written on the ornament and then hand the gift back to participating store. Volunteers also help collect, wrap, and deliver the gifts to the seniors.
In addition to individual volunteers purchasing gifts for seniors, schools, girl and boy scout groups, and police and fire departments can also become involved.
The program is expansive, runs across the USA and Canada, and has helped elderly by providing more than one million gifts to 700,000 seniors.
Participating businesses have included, Wal-Mart and Walgreens.
